Beale, Dorothea 1831-1906. British pioneer in
women's education, whose work helped to raise
the standard of women's education and the
status of women teachers. She was
headmistress of the Ladies' College at
Cheltenham from 1858, and founder of St
Hilda's Hall, Oxford, 1892.
